Little Paper Flag

PaperFlagThe Story of the Little Paper Flag

Between the pages of my Bible is a small homemade paper flag. It only has five stripes, three red and two white, and just ten blue stars; and it is crudely colored with crayons. It is on a paper "staff" that is secured with tape. It is a very inaccurate and childish representation of our glorious flag. But to me, it is perfect.

I treasure this small, homemade flag because of what was written on the back of it by my mom. It says, "In memory of September 11, 2001, and our beloved flag." She added the date, Saturday, Sept. 22. It then goes on to tell the story of this little flag.

"Let's Roll" by Richard Rackley

Flight-93-marker"Let's Roll" is a poem written by Richard Rackley after 9/11/2001.

Mr. Rackley was inspired to write the following poem after hearing about a passenger, Todd Beamer, on United Airlines Flight 93, who recorded the events of that flight to a customer-service operator named Lisa, who also got a message to his wife. Beamer's wife told a story that whenever he would take their kids out, he would say "Let's Roll." That was his slogan.

Now considered American heroes, Beamer, along with a handful of other passengers, are believed to have mounted an assault on the hijackers. His last audible words were:

"Are you guys ready? Let's roll."
